SORN explained: when a car is off the road

A Statutory Off Road Notification stops road tax, but it also changes what you can legally do with the car. Here's the practical version.

What SORN is

SORN stands for Statutory Off Road Notification. It is how you tell DVLA a vehicle is not being used or kept on a public road. Once a valid SORN is in place, you do not pay vehicle tax for that period.

It is not a casual "I'm not driving it this month" note. If the car is kept on the public road, including a street outside your house, it generally needs to be taxed and insured in the normal way. SORN is for vehicles kept off public roads, such as on a driveway or in a garage, subject to the current DVLA rules.

What you can and cannot do

  • You cannot drive it on public roads, except in very limited cases such as a pre-booked MOT appointment, and even then the rules are strict. Treat "I'll just pop to the shops" as not allowed.
  • Insurance still matters. SORN does not automatically mean zero insurance. Check your policy. Some keep cover for fire and theft while the car is laid up.
  • MOT can lapse. A SORN car can sit without a current MOT, but it will need a valid MOT again before it can be taxed and returned to normal road use.
SORN is not a parking ticket workaround

If the car is on a public road, SORN is the wrong tool. Tax and insurance are the usual legal requirements there.

Buying a car that is on SORN

A SORN car can be a fair buy if the price reflects the work needed to put it back on the road. Budget for tax, a possible MOT, and any repairs the last MOT advisories already pointed at.

Also run the usual risk checks. SORN status does not clear outstanding finance or a write-off marker. A ServiceLad report still matters before you pay, and MOTCO's SORN and tax status check is a quick way to confirm how the vehicle is currently recorded before you arrange collection.

After you buy: keep watching the registration

Once the car is taxed again and the keeper details change, paperwork can move quickly. If you want notice of later V5C activity rather than a single snapshot on purchase day, ServiceLad's V5C alerts watch the registration over a set period after you buy.

Common questions

Does SORN cancel outstanding finance?

No. Finance is a separate agreement. A SORN car can still have money owed against it.

Can I SORN a car without an MOT?

Yes. Many SORN vehicles have no current MOT. You will usually need a valid MOT before taxing it again for road use.

Always check the current DVLA guidance for SORN, tax and MOT rules before moving a laid-up car. The details can change.
