Is my car ULEZ compliant?

Pop your reg in and we will tell you whether London would charge you £12.50 a day. The answer comes from the fuel type and Euro emissions standard held against your vehicle, and we show you both, so you can see why rather than take a badge on trust.

What makes a car ULEZ compliant?

The Euro emissions standard the vehicle was built to, and nothing else. A petrol car needs Euro 4, a diesel needs Euro 6, and a petrol motorbike needs Euro 3. Fully electric and hydrogen vehicles are compliant because they have no tailpipe emissions.

What does it cost if my car does not meet it?

£12.50 for each day the vehicle is driven inside the zone. It runs every day except Christmas Day, and a day means midnight to midnight, so a late evening trip home can catch two charges. If you never drive into the zone there is nothing to pay and nothing to register.

My car is old but it passed. Is that right?

Quite possibly. Age is a rough guide, not the rule. The rule is the Euro standard, and some cars were built to a cleaner standard than their year suggests. That is why we show you the Euro number the answer was based on. Transport for London keeps its own database and has the final say, so confirm your reg with TfL before you rely on it.

ULEZ questions drivers ask

Is my car ULEZ compliant?

Pop your reg in and we read the fuel type and Euro standard held against your vehicle. Petrol normally needs Euro 4, diesel needs Euro 6, a petrol motorbike needs Euro 3, and anything fully electric is compliant.

What does ULEZ cost me if my car does not meet it?

£12.50 for each day you drive inside the zone. It runs every day except Christmas Day, and a day means midnight to midnight, so a late evening trip home can catch two charges.

My car is old but it passed. Is that right?

Quite possibly. Age is a rough guide, not the rule. The rule is the Euro standard the vehicle was built to, and some cars were built cleaner than their year suggests. That is why we show you the Euro number the answer used.

Do I have to pay if I never drive into London?

No. There is nothing to pay unless the vehicle is driven inside the zone. There is no annual fee and nothing to register if you stay out of it.

Does ULEZ apply outside London?

London ULEZ does not, but Birmingham and Bath run their own clean air zones and Birmingham charges private cars. Several other cities run zones that only charge taxis, vans, buses and lorries.

Where does this answer come from?

The vehicle's own registration record: fuel, Euro standard, first registration date and CO2. Transport for London keeps its own database and has the final say, so use the TfL link before you rely on it.

Does a ULEZ result change if I keep the car?

The rules can change, and so can what is held against your reg. A vehicle record is not fixed. That is why we also offer alerts when DVLA reissues the logbook against your vehicle.
